The establishment of Alphabet was prompted by a desire to become a technology conglomerate which makes the core Google internet services business “cleaner and more accountable” while allowing greater autonomy to group companies that operate in businesses other than Internet services. With this in mind, the company is engaged in the business of acquisition and operation of different companies.
The company operates through the Google segment and other than the internet services segment. The Google segment includes its main Internet products such as Search, Ads, Commerce, Maps, YouTube, Apps, Cloud, Android, Chrome, Google Play, as well as hardware products such as Chromecast, Chromebooks, and Nexus. The other than the internet services segment includes businesses such as Access or Google Fiber, Calico, Nest, Verily, GV, Google Capital, X, and other initiatives.
The largest subsidiary of Alphabet is Google but includes some other subsidiaries like Calico, DeepMind, GV, CapitalG, X, Google Fiber, Jigsaw, Makani, Sidewalk Labs, Verily, Waymo, Wing and Loon.
